ScotchMatch is a small, independently run site — see About ScotchMatchfor who's behind it. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit, why we collect it, and what choices you have. If anything here is unclear, email us atscotchmatch.biz@gmail.com and we'll sort it out.

Information We Collect

When you visit ScotchMatch, we ask you to confirm you're of legal drinking age, and we store that confirmation, along with your cookie-consent choice, in your browser's local storage — not on our servers. If you consent to analytics cookies, Google Analytics (GA4) collects standard visit data (pages viewed, general location, device type) plus a handful of events specific to this site: when you start or complete the quiz, complete a quiz step, click through to a retailer, or submit the email form. If you choose to enter your email address to get your quiz results, we also collect that email address and the bottles the quiz matched you with.

Cookies and Local Storage

ScotchMatch uses your browser's local storage (not cookies) to remember your age confirmation and your analytics-cookie choice. Google Analytics, if you've consented to it, sets its own cookies to recognize you across visits. You can change your analytics choice at any time using the "Cookie preferences" link in the footer of any page.

ScotchMatch is hosted on Netlify. Like any web host, Netlify processes the requests made to load this site and may log standard technical details — such as IP address and request timing — as part of normal hosting operations.

Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use ScotchMatch — which pages get read, whether the quiz gets finished, and so on. GA4 only loads if you accept analytics cookies; if you decline, none of this tracking happens. GA4 uses your IP address briefly, to estimate general location such as city or country, but it does not store your full IP address afterward. Email (Kit)

If you complete the quiz and choose to enter your email address to receive your results, we send your email address and your top matched bottles to Kit (formerly ConvertKit), the email platform we use to send you that results email and any future ScotchMatch emails you've opted into. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time. If you don't enter your email, none of this happens. You can read more inKit's Privacy Policy.

Product links on ScotchMatch are often affiliate links that route through the Awin affiliate network, which sets its own tracking cookie so we can be credited for a resulting purchase. See our fullAffiliate Disclosure for details.

Your Rights

ScotchMatch is a Canadian business based in New Brunswick, so our primary obligations around your personal information come from PIPEDA (the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act). If you're visiting from the UK, EU, or California, you may also have additional rights under GDPR or CCPA respectively — we honor those too.

In practice, this means you can ask us to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, and you can withdraw consent for analytics at any time. To exercise any of this: email scotchmatch.biz@gmail.com; unsubscribe directly from any Kit email or ask us to remove you; and use the "Cookie preferences" link in the footer, or Google's opt-out add-on above, to control analytics.

Because we use Google Analytics (Google, based in the US), Kit (also US-based), and Awin (UK-based) to run this site, some of your personal information may be processed or stored outside Canada as a result.

Data Retention

We keep information only as long as it's useful for the purposes described above — for example, your email and quiz matches stay in Kit until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Local storage and cookies stay in your browser until you clear them or they expire.

Children's Privacy

ScotchMatch discusses and links to alcoholic beverages and is intended only for adults of legal drinking age, consistent with the age confirmation required to use the site. It is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time as the site changes. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
